3 Commitments- Part I
Yes, these are commitments and not commandments so I choose to make them to myself. My work requires me to travel frequently. For quite some years I have been struggling to inculcate some few good habits in myself. I travel for work and that means I don’t completely decide when I would be going away from home and when I am going to come back. I start with some good habits and there they get broken once my travel dates get fixed and I start thinking that anyway these habits are going to get a break then why to care so seriously about them. That’s when these habits go away and I start facing the same troubles again.
The 21 day period of lock down is an opportunity to re-look at your troubling problems and get habituated to the good habits that you always wished for. I am going to remain stable at one place for next few days and I have made 3 commitments which relate to the health improvement. The first one is to do exercise regularly, second is to do meditation regularly and third one is to cut down excessive sugar intake. I am fortunate enough to have some head start in all of them as I started on these just few days before this Corona virus halted public life. It is an opportunity to work on these positive habits with steadfastness. There is another advantage of building immunity through these habits. By now everybody knows that there is no antidote developed till date for Corona virus and the only thing you can bank on is your own immunity.
In this post I am writing about exercise. I am not an expert but have enough minimum exposure so that I can suggest you something. Your gyms, parks, zumba classes, yoga groups and laughter clubs are going to remain closed and your only option is to remain in house. Most of you do not have exercise equipments. I suggest body weight exercises. There are ample free videos on YouTube to guide you if you don’t know about them. If you are fortunate like me to have some open space like a terrace or a yard, do it early morning. It will make you inhale more oxygen. I assume air is not polluted these days at your location, since factories are closed and traffic is almost nonexistent. It would help your body to make Vitamin D as you get exposed to the sun. Don’t worry much about the tan because you are not going out for next few days.
I regularly practice Suryanamaskar which combines Yoga and exercise. I am lucky enough to have learned it with compulsion as I attended a Marathi medium Maharashtra State curriculum school. This is one wholesome exercise which helps to lose fat as you stretch your muscles. Each step is one yoga pose in itself so as you do it with proper technique you get the mental health benefit you derive from the focus. I have been doing average 20 Suryanamaskars a day with maximum capacity built for 60 in a go. In this lock down period I plan to take it upto 100. I shall update you on this at the end of this period.
We plan to break the chain of Corona Virus spread by remaining at home. How about making a new chain of good habits? What are your plans? Do let me know.
